Command Sergeant Major Joey Recker took responsibility of the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team on November 6th, 2010. CSM Recker has held a variety of leadership positions throughout his military career ranging from Master Gunner to Command Sergeant Major.

As Command Sergeant Major of the 48th Brigade, CSM Recker serves as the brigade commander's personal advisor on all enlisted matters, particularly areas affecting Soldier training and quality of life. He devotes the majority of his time to observing training and talking to Soldiers and their families and ensuring their readiness.

CSM Recker is a native of Plains, GA and was born on May 13, 1964. He joined the Georgia Army National Guard on March 27, 1985. He attended Basic Training at Fort Knox, KY and Advanced Individual Training at Ft. Monmouth, NJ.

Throughout his 25 year career he has served in every enlisted leadership position from Master Gunner to his current position. Other assignments include Platoon Sergeant in Bosnia-Herzegovina during SFOR 9, Operations Sergeant Major for the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team during Operation Iraqi Freedom in Baghdad and Tallil, Iraq and Command Sergeant Major of the 1st Squadron, 108th Cavalry (RSTA) in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom.

His military education includes the Basic Noncommissioned Officer's Course, Bradley Fighting Vehicle Master Gunner Course, Advanced Noncommissioned Officer's Course, the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, Command Sergeants Major Course and the Senior Joint Enlisted Professional Military Education Course.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (3rd award), Meritorious Service Medal (2nd award), Army Commendation Medal (4th award), Army Achievement Medal (5th award), Army Good Conduct Medal (8th award), National Defense Service Medal (2nd award), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal (2nd award), Iraq Campaign Medal (2nd award), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (2nd award), Noncommissioned Officer Development Ribbon (4th award), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (4th award), NATO Medal for Service in the former Yugoslavia, the NATO Medal for International Security Assistance Forces, Georgia Medal of Valor, Meritorious Unit Citation, Georgia Meritorious Service Medal, Georgia Commendation Medal (3rd award), Georgia Special Operations Ribbon, Georgia Humanitarian Service Medal, Georgia State Active Duty Ribbon (5th award), Georgia Service Medal (2nd award), Georgia Recruiting Ribbon. In addition he has earned the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Combat Action Badge and been inducted into both the Order of Saint George and the Order of Saint Maurice.

Command Sergeant Major Recker earned a Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Arts from Excelsior College in New York and has served on the City Council of Plains, GA. He and his wife, Sonya, have been married for 25 years and have three children. Joey, Katherine, and Jessica.
